Taking the Guesswork Out of Mental Health Medications
How GeneSight® Testing Helps Find the Right Treatment Faster
Finding the right psychiatric medication can be life-changing — but for many patients, it involves a long process of trial and error. Starting a medication, waiting weeks to see how it works, adjusting doses, switching to a new option… it can be frustrating, exhausting, and discouraging.
At Inner Peace Mental Health and Counseling, I want to make that process easier, more informed, and more personalized. That’s why I offer GeneSight® testing — a simple tool that helps us understand how your unique genetic makeup may affect your response to certain mental health medications.
What Is GeneSight® Testing?
GeneSight® is a type of pharmacogenomic test — meaning it looks at how your genes may impact your body’s ability to process medications. It analyzes specific genes that affect how your body metabolizes or responds to psychiatric medications used to treat conditions like:
Depression
Anxiety
ADHD
Bipolar disorder
PTSD
With a quick cheek swab done in the office or at home, GeneSight provides a personalized report showing which medications may work better (or worse) for you based on your genetic profile.
How Does It Work?
The process is simple and non-invasive:
A cheek swab is used to collect a small DNA sample.
The sample is sent to a certified lab for analysis.
In a few days, we receive a detailed report that categorizes medications into:
Use as directed
Use with caution
Use with increased caution and more frequent monitoring
We review the results together and use them to help guide our treatment plan.
It’s important to know: GeneSight doesn’t tell us exactly what to prescribe, but it gives us valuable information that can help avoid medications that may be less effective or cause more side effects for you.
Why I Use GeneSight in My Practice
In my experience, GeneSight can make a real difference — especially for patients who:
Have tried multiple medications without success
Experience severe side effects or poor tolerability
Want a more personalized, data-informed approach to care
Feel anxious about starting psychiatric medication for the first time
Mental health treatment is not one-size-fits-all. GeneSight helps us move away from guesswork and toward precision medicine, where your treatment is guided by your own biology.
The Benefits of GeneSight Testing
Faster path to the right medication
Fewer side effects and trial-and-error cycles
Improved confidence in your treatment plan
More informed decision-making for both patient and provider
GeneSight is covered by many insurance plans, and affordable payment options are available if needed. Most patients pay $0–$330 depending on coverage.
Your Journey, Your Biology, Your Plan
At Inner Peace, I believe in integrating the best of science and compassion to support your mental health journey. GeneSight testing is one of the many tools I use to ensure that your care is as personalized, informed, and effective as possible.
If you’ve struggled to find a medication that works — or if you simply want to make a more confident decision about treatment — GeneSight may be a great option to explore.
